Let’s Write an eBook Together!

The idea of writing an eBook with collective efforts has been on my mind for a while now, so let’s give it a try. Basically I want to create a project that would group together the ideas and tips from different people, in a way that it would benefit both the collaborators and the end user (i.e. the readers).

The Process

The topic for this eBook is going to be “Tips, Tricks and Strategies to Make Money Online.” It is an not the newest of the topics, I know, but you can’t deny that it is a very popular one. Additionally, the collaborative format will add some freshness to it, because on the same eBook you will find the tips and opinions from a wide range of people, all with different backgrounds and experiences on the Internet.
The creation of the eBook will be pretty simple. Participants will send me their tips, tricks or strategies to make money online, and I will organize them together. Each page will feature one different person.
Once the eBook is formatted, styled and ready to go, I will release it on Daily Blog Tips, and all the participants will be allowed to release it on their websites or blogs, too.

Why You Should Participate

I know that I need to make the project beneficial for everyone involved, so here is why you should participate.
1. First of all it might help you with your brand. Your name and website URL will be featured on top of the page where we will include your submission. I can’t know for sure how many people will end up downloading the eBook, but there is a possibility that thousands of people will, and they will all come across your name.
2. Secondly, I want to make sure that the participants will also gain traffic out of the eBook. How so? In the end of each submission, we will include 3 links to popular or useful posts on your blog. You are free to choose what those 3 posts are going to be (I will just have some editorial control to make sure they are indeed useful and related). These 3 links are optional though.
Here is how a page of the eBook would look like:
ebook-together
3. Finally, the participants will also have the right to distribute the eBook to their email or RSS subscribers (but you won’t be able to offer direct downloads for the eBook).
This could be useful for people looking to build an email list, or to give your visitors an incentive to subscribe to your blog.

Rules for Participating

If you want to participate, all you need to do is to send me an email (danielATdailyblogtips.com) with your tips, tricks or strategies to make money online. For example, you could write about the importance of networking with people online, or you could share an strategy to make money with mini websites and Google AdSense.
The better your advice or strategy, the higher the chances of someone deciding to click on the links to your blog posts.
Your submission must have between 200 and 300 words. Make sure to include the 3 posts that want to appear on your page as well (and please proofread!)
The deadline for the submissions is next Wednesday, February 4 (midnight EST)

Teen Blogger Earns $900 a Month

According to a recent Cnet article, a teenage blogger showcased at the BlogHer 2007 Conference earns $20 to $30 a day through AdSense on her Ultimate Neopets Cheats site. That’s $700 to $900 a month with “very little work,” a feat most of us older bloggers would love to attain.
How did Chloe Spencer do it? From the video, her strategy doesn’t sound out of the ordinary. She started out on a WordPress.com blog and moved to her own domain to run AdSense. She was knowledgeable and passionate about her topic, knew a thing or two about SEO, integrated ads to blend with her content, and participated in her niche’s online community. By all accounts, she just followed common blogging wisdom and it paid off.
Success stories like this are inspiring. It’s just another confirmation that, with a well-structured blog, a topic that you’re passionate about, and a little SEO know-how, you can earn a significant income through blogging no matter who you are. Props to Chloe for reaffirming our faith in blogging as a rewarding way of life.

8 Tips to Optimize Adsense Units

Adsense is one of the most common revenue generators for blogs and websites. Usually you can drastically improve your click-through rate and overall earnings by positioning the ads wisely, by improving the content targeting or by optimizing the ad units directly. Below I will cover the last point, how to optimize the Adsense units with 8 simple tips:
  1. The three top performing ad units are: 336×280 large rectangle, 300×250 inline rectangle and 160×600 wide skyscraper. Consider using those units if possible, but bear in mind that other formats might be more suitable for your website design.
  2. The most successful link color is blue. This fact is connected with the roots of the Internet where all major websites used to feature blue links.
  3. Apart from blue links you can also use a link color that matches the pattern of your website (i.e. If you use green links make the Adsense links of the same color).
  4. As a general rule of thumb, blend (no border, same background) your Adsense units if your website has a light color scheme and contrast (border, contrasting background) the units if you are using a dark color scheme
  5. If the ads are placed within the content you should avoid using borders while ad units outside of the content can use borders to call attention.
  6. If your website has mainly repeat visitors (like Forums) you can rotate the background color of the units to reduce ad blindness
  7. Consider removing the “Advertise on this site” message from your units. This can be done on the control panel under the “My Account” section, disabling the “Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up” feature.
  8. Test, test and test. Every website is unique so make sure you test with different colors and formats and track the results to fine tune your Adsense units.

Making Money Online is About Getting Big (and Not About Jamming Ads on Your Website)

I see this far too often:
  • Guy reads on some blog or website that it is possible to work from home and make thousands of dollars from the Internet.
  • Guy gets excited and creates a website or blog.
  • Guy starts getting some traffic, and right after he jams his website with all kinds of ads. CPM banners, 125×125 buttons, Google Adsense, Kontera and so on.
  • Guy wonders how come he is just making $100 monthly after a lot of hard work
When I come across those small websites hammered with ads I get the impression that the owner is trying to milk every last penny out of the visitors that are coming there, instead of trying to grow the site itself.
Sure depending on your luck and skill you might end up making a couple of hundred dollars every month. But is that what you are aiming for? Even if you manage to reach $1,000 monthly. Is that your ultimate goal?
The problem with this approach is twofold. First of all when you pack your website with ads all over the place, you will damage your reputation. Some readers will think that you are just trying to make a quick buck, and they will probably never return.
Secondly, when you try to make as much money as possible from a website that is not even getting 1,000 uniques a day, you automatically start with the wrong mindset. You adjust your goals accordingly, probably limiting your growth potential.
Now you might ask: “what about sites like TechCrunch or Mashable that also have ads all over the place?”
Well, those websites already have a very big audience, and huge credibility on the market. Once you are at that stage, you probably can pull off an ad-heavy layout without facing too many problems. But I am sure that when Michael Arrington started TechCrunch his main goal was to make the blog an authority on its niche, and not to squeeze money out of his early visitors.
Note that even those large websites never blend ads with the content, or use intrusive forms of advertising like pop-ups and in-text ads.
The takeaway message is: if you want to make money online, aim to get big and credible first, and then monetize it.

Do You Want to Create a “Make Money Online” Blog? Read This First

You probably have already seen dozens, if not hundreds of “make money online” blogs and websites out there, right? Their popularity is no secret: people see bloggers earning big time in this niche (or at least claiming to), and they decide to jump in to see if they can get a piece of the pie. Unfortunately most people who follow that route will fail in the long run.
A couple of weeks ago I came across a post from Yaro, titled How To Make Money Teaching People How To Make Money, that explained how this pattern unfolds. Here is a quote from it:
Some people consider making money by teaching how to make money essentially a scam. I mean if you know a system of how to make money, why not just use that system rather than sell it? That smells fishy right? Umm, no, I find that logic quite silly. Why not make money using your system AND teaching it.
So, why can a small minority of people earn big in the Internet marketing industry and the majority fail miserably? Is the make money online niche only full of scammers or those who just got lucky?
As someone who has been making money in this niche for years – and I’ve certainly climbed the ladder over time – I’m in a pretty good position to explain the subtle elements that people new to Internet marketing won’t see.
The interesting thing about Yaro’s post is that he is not only explaining why people fail to make money on the “make money online” niche, but he also lays down some points and tips that you can use to succeed. Worth a read.
